New Clean Energy Workshops Offered by AWE Sponsor Utility Classroom

AWE sponsor Utility Classroom is offering a one-day workshop in cities around the country, called Clean Energy Meets the Electric Utility Industry. By addending this workshop, you’ll learn what clean, green and renewable energy really mean; how the electric grid functions and how grid operators are handling greater penetrations of clean energy; why utility regulation models may not encourage change; how solar changed everything; and the challenges and promises of de-carbonizing transportation. Throughout the day we will simplify the overly complex industry jargon and help you gain better insights into the changes, challenges, and opportunities for you in today’s energy marketplace. Make Plans to Attend the 2nd Annual KBH Center Symposium: “The Future of the Oil and Gas Industry”

The centerpiece of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Energy, Business & Law will be the Second Annual KBH Center Symposium, which will take place on February 10, 2017. The title of the symposium is “The Future of the Oil and Gas Industry: Peak Oil or Peak Demand – What’s the Horizon?” and will feature some of the nation’s leaders in the oil and gas sector. API President and CEO Jack Gerard will give the luncheon keynote address, and industry leaders Scott Sheffield (Pioneer), David Baldwin (SCF Partners), Tom Petrie (Petrie Partners), and Sir Simon Mayall (Greenhill) will also speak. The oil and gas industry is grappling with external factors – lower commodity prices attributable to abundant new supplies of gas and oil, coupled with slowed economic growth in China and elsewhere – that are putting pressure on the industry’s traditional business model. In addition, the energy industry itself is changing as a result of improved drilling technologies, the viability of alternative energy sources, and global pressure to reduce carbon emissions. The industry experts at this conference will discuss these factors and others, as well as their perspectives on the likely impacts of the new President’s energy policy on the industry.

AWE Power Matters Conference Cancelled Due to Hurricane Matthew

Regrettably, AWE was forced to cancel our upcoming Power Matters Conference due to severe weather in the Florida area from Hurricane Matthew. A decision has not been made regarding rescheduling, but attendees have been informed and will be kept up to date. Please check back with us for more information as it becomes available.

AWE Board Member Lindsay Sander leads panel at NARUC

LindsaySander AWE Boardmember Lindsay Sander lead an informative panel on PHMSA Nuts and Bolts at the NARUC Conference that recently concluded in Nashville. The panel covered Increases in U.S. natural gas production, usage and commercialization of natural gas are changing the regulatory landscape for the U.S. natural gas industry and its customers.

The safe, reliable and cost effective operation of the natural gas pipeline infrastructure in critical to our economy and security. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline Hazardous Material and Safety Administration’s mission is to protect people and the environment by advancing the safe transportation of energy and other hazardous materials that are essential to our daily lives. To do this, PHMSA’s stated mission is to establish national policy, set and enforce standards, educate, and conduct research to prevent incidents. PHMSA also prepares the public and first responders to reduce consequences if an incident does occur. In this two part Nashville moderated series we will explore all that is happening at PHMSA specifically as it concerns the proposed regulations and rules surrounding the safety of natural gas distribution and transmission pipelines. Attendees will be provided with the framework and tools necessary to explore and understand their respective roles and responsibilities in ensuring the delivery of natural gas to our communities safely, reliably, responsibly and affordably.

Save the Date: AWE Solar Energy Conference

Join AWE for a mini-conference on Tuesday, May 24th, 2016 from 1-4 pm. The conference will be held at LCRA’s RedBud Center, 3601 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin and feature a panel of 4 to discuss “Challenges/Opportunities for Solar Energy” – How to value this resource from multiple perspectives.

We are still assembling the panel, but Tom Oney, General Counsel for LCRA, Debbie Kimberly, Vice-President, Customer Energy Solutions, Austin Energy, and an official with SunPower will be members of the panel. The cost is free to AWE members and $25 for non-members.

What Are You Doing With Your Power?

I recently attended AWE’s Oct. 14 “Power Matters Conference” in Omaha. Nearly 75 women from the energy industry joined me in a quest to expand our knowledge about fuel sources, energy markets and environmental issues. The speakers – whose biographies represented decades of higher education, hundreds of professional risks and opportunities, and the continuous paradigm of work/life balance – inspired me to do and be more than I am today as a woman working in the energy industry.

Sue Kelly, APPA President & CEO, encouraged me to become indispensable as a subject matter expert. Susan Landahl, senior vice president of Exelon Generation, was cautious about subsidies for renewables while expressing compassion for the closure of Pilgrim where her career first began. And, as she does in this video clip, author and Survivor contestant Holly Hoffman inspired me to believe the leadership flame within each of us is an individual’s choice to light.

After attending the “Power Matters Conference,” I am resolved to use my power and influence to:

1) Help others succeed. One of the best parts of my job as a manager is to give my staff opportunities, encourage them to try new things, and, through their experiences, help our corporate communications department achieve more.

2) Ask questions, especially when others don’t. Formerly a high school English teacher, I enjoyed the dialogue I had with students who asked questions. I believe in the concept of “life-long learning” and advise others to be selfish in exploring that which interests you.

3) See things from others’ points of view. I may not always agree with a colleague or friend’s political, philosophical, or management position, but unless I try to understand why they think as they do, I will only see my own. To get the best view of the world, I need to open my window as far as I can.

If I do these three things with a sincere and meaningful heart, I can’t help but become a better person. And isn’t that where the best power lies?
